Region: Muranga, Kenya
Producers: Approximately 3,500 smallholders delivering cherry to the Getuya Factory, in partnership with the New Murarandia Farmers Cooperative Society
Varietal: Field Blend(sl-28, sl-34, batian, ruiru)
Process: Washed
Tasting notes: Pinot Grigio, Oolong tea, Jasmine
Producer info:
Operated by the New Murarandia Farmers Cooperative Society, Getuya Factory sits on the western side of the Aberdare Mountains in Muranga, Kenya. Getuya Factory serves over 3,500 local smallholders, each owning an average of between 1/5th-1/3rd of a hectare. Upon being delivered, cherry is typically washed for between 12-48 hours in open air concrete tanks, before being moved to a secondary washing channels where it continues to ferment for another 12-72 hours. The coffees are then dried in parchment on raised beds.
Cup Notes: The comparison to our recent Kenya Gachatha release is impossible to avoid here, and this cup clears it quite handily. We are absolute fiends for acidity and this is screaming. Immediately hit with clean white grapes, a white wine note similar to a good Pinot Grigio. As the cup cools, a lovely oolong tea makes itself known, followed by subtle jasmine florals. All throughout the evolution here, that acidity stays poppin and present.
